Stephen B. Ballard

In 1978, Stephen B. Ballard started S.B. Ballard Construction Company (SBBCC) in Norfolk, Virginia as a renovation contracting business.  Steve began working out of his home on Lafayette Boulevard doing small projects for the Norfolk Housing Authority, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and larger contractors.

As SBBCC began to grow, Steve moved his office to the pawn shop on Lafayette Boulevard, and then to Hunt Auto Supply on Lafayette Boulevard.  SBBCC eventually moved to Killam Avenue, where it became a full-fledged concrete contracting company.  After establishing SBBCC as one of the premier concrete companies in the region, the company started doing general construction projects, including its corporate headquarters in Virginia Beach, where the company relocated in 2000.

SBBCC’s first general contracting project was building Jiffy Lubes.  The company eventually grew into one of the largest general contractors in the Tidewater Area, completing projects such as the Virginia Beach Seawall, University Village at Old Dominion University, S.B. Ballard Stadium at Foreman Field, and the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center.

Today, SBBCC is the 13th largest concrete contractors in the Nation and the 11th largest general contractor in Virginia.  SBBCC has grown from a 2 person company to a company that now employs approximately 300 people.

Throughout the company’s 32-year history, Steve has been involved in numerous organizations,  serving as a Board Member for CHKD’s Run for the Children, Treasurer of the Old Dominion University Education Foundation, Board Member for Edmarc Hospice, Past President of the Associated General Contractors of America and is currently serving as a Board Member on the Virginia Beach Wetlands Committee,  a member on Old Dominion University’s Education Foundation,  and is the 2011 Chairman of the American Heart Association’s Start! Heart Walk.

Steve lives in Virginia Beach with his wife BJ and three dogs.  Steve has two children, Stephen Jr (28) and Stephanie (23), who are both employed at SBBCC.  Steve enjoys spending time with family and friends, taking his Midnight Express Boat out in the water and spending time at his condo in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

One of the most important parts of Steve’s life, which he admits he does not take enough time to pay tribute to, is his wife BJ.  BJ has been by Steve’s side through the good and the bad times, his purchasing of multiple boats, his involvement in boat races and white water rafting, and Steve’s notoriously excessive work habits of 10-12 hour days, 7 days a week. Without a doubt, Steve and BJ’s marriage is the linchpin of Steve’s overall success. Without this wonderful woman by his side, Steve knows that he would not have made it to where he is today.
