Horizons Hampton Roads is funded by individual and business contributions (cash and in-kind). Private organization grants supplement funding needs. Horizons Hampton Roads receives no public or independent school cash funding.
Horizons is an affiliate of Horizons Student Enrichment Program® , a nationally-recognized program headquartered in New Canaan, Connecticut with more than 40 years of success (see http://www.horizonsnational.org and www.guidestar.org). Horizons makes a nine-year investment in its students, endeavoring to serve each child from first grade until ninth grade. When fully implemented, Horizons Hampton Roads will serve nine levels at each of its two sites. It will partner with the regional ACCESS Scholarship Foundation Program to insure continued support for its students through high school years.
Established in 1999, the Horizons Hampton Roads program has forged a unique cooperative partnership between public and independent schools. Horizons is currently working with Virginia Beach City Public Schools & Cape Henry Collegiate School and Norfolk Public Schools & Norfolk Collegiate School. In its inaugural summer, Horizons served thirty-three first graders from Norfolk and Virginia Beach public schools. In the summer of 2006, Horizons will serve more than 200 children from first through eighth grades who are students in Virginia Beach and Norfolk public schools. Horizons expects to serve nearly 250 children by the summer of 2007 when it reaches full capacity at its inaugural sites.
Horizons Hampton Roads provides a six-week summer academic, cultural, and social enrichment program in an independent school setting. The program is designed to encourage Hampton Roads children living in families with limited income to realize their full potentials. Guided by a professional faculty in a nurturing, small-class environment, the program emphasizes academics, the arts, intramural sports, and social growth. In addition, Middle School students receive special science and athletics instruction. A 4:1 student to teacher ratio is maintained to optimize the activities-based academic and enrichment experiences. Developing partnerships with field trip destinations will increase the impact of academic enrichment by providing a summer-to-summer curricular growth.
Horizons children spend their summer mornings and afternoons in stimulating academic classes and in cultural, social, and athletic activities. Each week, the children benefit from certified swimming instruction, music instruction, art activities, as well as field trips.
Each year faculty weaves a focus of the year into their lessons. This curriculum augmentation is designed to accomplish the following:
UNDERLYING PURPOSE---CURRICULUM AUGMENTATION:
1) Raise the academic and community outing curriculum to a higher level to provide students with new perspectives on an issue they face in their everyday lives.
2) Provide a culminating performance/experience to tie the curriculum focus together.
UNDERLYING GOAL:
Thread a real-world issue through all aspects of programming to enable students to
1) better grapple with issues/events they face
2) help give that broader issue a more personal import.
UNDERLYING STRATEGIES:
1) Each year HHR’s academic staff will identify a prominent current event or issue that it believes the students are facing and/or will face as they grow to independence.
2) Staff will address it in creative ways through lesson plans & outings choices.
In addition, Horizons Hampton Roads provides periodic Saturday sessions during the public school year for students who have attended the previous summer program. These sessions follow a seasonal theme and provide hands-on activities that utilize a variety of academic skills and require social interaction. These school-year sessions afford students the opportunity to reconnect with students who they would not otherwise see while continuing to benefit from the academic enrichment provided.
